Boukje Schweigman studied at the Mime Department of the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Since 2008, she has been the artistic director of her own company, Schweigman&, which is known for performances that place the sensory experience of the audience at their core.
Schweigman&'s productions often originate from a conceptual idea, a physical form, or a universal theme such as movement, the cycle of life, or the nature of time. In close collaboration with performers – and often within specially designed spaces – these themes are developed into physical and spatial experiences. By playing with light and darkness, space, time, sound, and scent, the audience’s perception is deliberately shaped and deepened. Over the years, Schweigman& has developed a distinctive style rooted in phenomenology.
The company’s work has been presented at festivals both in the Netherlands and internationally, including in Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belarus, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, China and Bolivia.
