In 1955, German artist and curator Arnold Bode founded the first edition of documenta in Kassel, an exhibition of contemporary art. Initially intended to contribute to Germany’s cultural reconstruction and to reintroduce the so-called Entartete Kunst banned during National Socialism, documenta developed into one of the most influential platforms for post-war and contemporary art worldwide.

Since 1955, the exhibition has been held approximately every five years in Kassel and lasts one hundred days, earning it the nickname ‘Museum of 100 Days’. Its temporary nature allows curators to respond to current social and artistic developments.

Each edition is led by a new artistic director; among those who have taken on this role are Harald Szeemann (1972), Rudi Fuchs (1982), Jan Hoet (1992), Okwui Enwezor (2002), and Adam Szymczyk (2017).
