El Cimarrón
Festival d'Aix-en-Provence

El Cimarrón, the maroon: a term originally used to describe domestic animals that had returned to the wilderness after an escape, and which later became the name for escaped slaves who sought refuge in inaccessible places. In 1968, Hans Werner Henze stumbled upon a rare testimony in Cuba from a former cimarrón, now a centenarian, who participated in the War of Independence and the Revolution. In collaboration with Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Henze transformed this testimony into a musical phenomenon. Elayce Ismail directs a highly physical production and aims to bring out the universal mythical value of the story.
During the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Ammodo Art supports two productions within the incises programme.
