With End and Beginning, pianist and artistic director Tomoko Mukaiyama brings together two radically different sonic worlds. The installation-performance links Composition No. 2 Dies irae (1973) by Galina Ustvolskaya – written for piano, percussion and eight double basses – with a new work by Aleksandr Raskatov for the same instrumentation.

In collaboration with light artist Reinier van Brummelen, a scenography emerges in which musicians and audience are drawn closer together. Through transitions of light and darkness and the use of projections, the boundary between stage and auditorium is blurred, and space itself is redefined.
