For the project ROOM IN OUR HOUSE, Nicole Beutler has entered into a collaboration with Haudenosaunee descendants of the original inhabitants of North America, exploring the question of how to live together in peace. The relationship between the Netherlands and the Haudenosaunee dates back 400 years, when Dutch ships sailed up the Hudson River.
Beutler’s curiosity about this history was sparked during the creation of ATMEN (2023), in which she explored the Indigenous concept of the interdependence of all species. Following an extensive research phase, she undertook a research trip to Syracuse (NY), where she was formally welcomed. This visit, together with encounters with Ty Defoe and Michelle Schenandoah, and a residency exploring shared artistic ideas and principles, led to the co-creation of ROOM IN OUR HOUSE: a dance duet that invites audiences to reflect on their own responsibility in peacemaking.
