WE ARE THE HOUSE is an installation performance by Tomoko Mukaiyama in which the human body is staged as a site of struggle for cultural change. The performance is the result of a long-term process of artistic experimentation in the form of Salons, developed in collaboration with artists and scholars, including composer Yannis Kyriakides, performer Just van Bommel and Rebecca Gomperts (Women on Waves). This artistic research revolved around themes such as the (female) body and identity, abortion, diversity and sustainability. Mukaiyama regards the performance as an artistic synthesis of this research process. Central to the performance is Rebecca Gomperts, physician and activist, who has long been committed to ensuring global access to abortion care, challenging stigma, and defending the fundamental right to make decisions about one’s own body.
